On My Needles.

A knitting journal. One project at a time — what I'm making, why I cast it on, what the yarn feels like, and what I'd tell you before you start. Three kids in. Still always something on the needles.

This pattern surprised me. A two-piece summer set — a little sleeveless top and matching bloomers — knit in worsted organic cotton with a design that's fresh and distinctly warm-weather. The silhouette is simple and wearable in a way that a lot of baby knits aren't, and it's exactly the kind of thing that makes sense for Florida babies who spend most of the year in as little as possible.

The construction is straightforward — this is not a challenging knit. What makes it special is the design itself and the yarn it calls for. Blue Sky Fibers Organic Cotton is a uniquely spun two-ply worsted that creates beautiful stitch definition without any fussiness. I used Shell (a warm off-white) and Tulip (a soft blush pink), and the combination is genuinely lovely in person.

The pattern was easy to follow and free of errors — which, if you've knit from enough baby pattern books, you know is not something you can take for granted. I found the instructions clear all the way through, which let me actually enjoy the knitting rather than puzzle over the directions. Would absolutely make this again in different colorways.

The yarn is what makes this pattern. Don't substitute it. Blue Sky Fibers Organic Cotton is a uniquely spun two-ply worsted that behaves completely differently from other cottons — it doesn't split, it holds its shape, and it softens beautifully with washing. You'll have enough Shell left over from the bloomers to make a second pair in a different color. Plan for that.

Little Garter Stitch Romper

From Summer Knitting for Little Sweethearts · Yarn substitute: Hobbii

This romper is a genuinely unusual construction. You cast on at a side seam and work the entire body in garter stitch, knitting back and forth until you join — then pick up stitches for the yoke from the top edge. It's one of those designs where the finished piece looks complicated and the actual knitting is meditative. The garter texture in a fine merino gives it a beautiful drape and a softness that reads expensive even though the yarn is budget-friendly.

The pattern, however, is a significant project in and of itself. This is a translation — and whoever translated it was not an experienced knitter. The errors aren't typos or math mistakes. They're conceptual misinterpretations that would cause real problems for anyone knitting by the letter rather than by instinct. "Knit around the leg holes back and forth" is not the same instruction as "join and knit in the round around the leg holes." A less experienced knitter following those directions exactly would end up with something unwearable and have no idea why. I caught these issues because I've knit enough to read between the lines. If this is your first or second project, this pattern would be genuinely frustrating in ways that aren't your fault.

The yarn — Bella Coco Merino from Hobbii in Pink Lemonade — is a substitute. The original yarn isn't available in the US. The color is lovely and the fiber content is right, but it splits constantly, which adds friction to every row. I'll use what I have and not buy it again. The finished piece is coming out beautifully regardless, and I cannot wait to put it on my daughter.

If you want to knit this pattern, you can — but budget extra time to interpret the instructions rather than follow them verbatim. Treat it like a puzzle where you know what the finished piece should look like and work backward when something doesn't make sense. The construction is logical once you understand it. The translation just doesn't always reflect that. For the yarn substitute: find something that doesn't split. The color is worth it. The splitting is not.
